The Scottish Cardiac Society has a central role in supporting cardiology trainees across Scotland.
Scottish Cardiac Society meetings.
The SCS holds two meetings a year where expert speakers are invited to give talks on topics spanning the breadth of cardiology and beyond. In addition, trainees are encouraged to submit research or quality improvement work to the Scientific Sessions, and if successful will be able to present their work either orally as an abstract presentation or a poster.
Scottish Cardiology National Training Programme (SCNTP)
This new initiative has been set up by the SCS with the support of the regional Training Programme Directors and NHS Education for Scotland. The aim is to improve provision of teaching to cardiology trainees across Scotland by delivering regular national curriculum-based training days to all Scottish trainees. The first session was run in February 2019 and we will aim to cover the entire core-curriculum over a three-year period. The days are organised primarily by the SCS Council Trainee representatives from each region.
The centralised training days were being held in Stirling Court Hotel, free of charge with lunch provided and industry support. Note that the sponsors have no input into the education content of the meetings. With the current restrictions on in person meetings we have moved to a virtual format using Microsoft Teams and are running monthly half-day training sessions (usually the last Friday afternoon of each month). The sessions are recorded and will be available online to view after the event (see link below) on the SCS YouTube channel. Note the videos are unlisted on YouTube and so must be accessed via this link.
Sample questions from the European Examination in General Cardiology (formerly the KBA), will be integrated into the talks, so these sessions should also be seen as good examination preparation. A certificate of attendance will also be provided at the end of the academic year prior to ARCP that can be uploaded to the NHS eportfolio and linked to provide evidence of experience in particular areas. This is particularly useful for more specialised areas of the core curriculum which can otherwise be difficult to access. Whilst these training sessions are aimed at the core curriculum, they will also be an excellent refresher for more senior registrars in areas outside of their sub-speciality interest.
For further information and to be added to the SCNTP Microsoft Teams channel (NHS email address works best to allow chat functionality) please contact scntp [at] scottishcardiac.org
You can view the recordings of previous sessions on the SCNTP playlist on the SCS YouTube channel.
